Abstract
Bone scan or bone scintigraphy is an effective clinical tool in diagnosing osseous metastasis and evaluating the response of osseous tumor to chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Most patients with bone metastases regularly receive bone scans that need to be compared with previous bone scans for the accurate diagnosis. However, it is difficult to maintain the intensity consistency between successive bone scans due to various conditions affecting the quality of images. To resolve the issue, we previously proposed the method for the contrast enhancement of successive bone scans based on histogram matching. Although the proposed method generally performed well, it caused an intensity distortion in the bone scans with regional irregularities. In this study, we presented a new method for the contrast enhancement of successive bone scans using regional histogram matching to resolve the limitation with the previous method.
